Locomotive Bauerhei 03

Luca Bossi

Kit: Revell

Scale: 1/87

A new member of AMV, I illustrate you a work a little bit out of the … “rails.”

Does it make any sense to construct a locomotive for a truly plane modeller enthusiast ?
Definitely, for all of us modelling enthusiasts a train has always symbolized an ancestral memory and the locomotive, in particular, epitomized a puffing black dragon with a long articulated-tail, which feeds on rock and has an heart of fire.

Furthermore, from time to time, it happens to all the modellers to find out something that prompts new challenges while talking to other enthusiasts of different specialties: this is why I put my planes aside for a little while and, as it has already happened in the past, to do myself and a friend a favour, I opted for the locomotive “Bauerhei 03”

The box - Revell no. 02166, scale 1/87 – contains about 90 pieces in two castings that, according to my reference documentation (a book bought in Germany dedicated to the 03 with schemes and about 100 photos of which 30 are in colour), are of good quality as far as the measures and the major details of the wheel arrangement, front and rear trolleys, brakes, tender and buffers are concerned. If it weren’t for an indeed non-sandable, soft, black, glossy plastic … !

Upgrade in details:

1. sand all the body of the boiler and re-do the reinforcement bands
2. re-built all the steam pipelines, which start from the cabin and run allover the body of the locomotive (sprue, soldering thread, Evergreen rods)
3. re-built the braking gear with its transmission
4. re-built the wiring going from the cabin to the lights
5. re-built the pipes going from the three domes ( handles re-done) to the wheels and then to the sand tanks
6. re-built the two anti-smoke bulkheads with their supports and the funnel
7. re-built the pipes and wiring from the tender to the locomotive (for pressure, electricity, water and braking)
8. re-built some levers, part of the cockpit and the bulkheads between tender and locomotive
9. improved wheels and axle; re-built the tank for the compressed air, which is located above the front trolley
10. re-built the windows’ transparent flaps using Kristal clear
11. re-built all the wheel arrangement but the connecting rods. In particular I re-built pistons and rods coming out of the box for the steam distribution and some struts and supports, not included in the kit, which are essential to support the moving parts
12. re-built some other minor parts such as handles, stairs to the cabin, whistle, cabin’s stools etc…

Painting

Dark grey (fs36118) as base color as it was the case in reality for some locomotives and then matt black, bearing in mind that from the photos you can see different shades of black, with traces of rust and percolation. In particular, some light grey can be noticed on the upper part of the locomotive, closer to the trail of smoke due to the ash– I guess - . Wheels in carminio red: some peeled off paint lets the metal out.

Difficulties

The plastic: soft, glossy and hard to work and the huge amount of photos, which made me aware of the numerous differences existing among the locomotives of the same 03 series regarding the pipes through and other technical details. That’s why the real 003-131-0 is different from its “sister” produced two locomotives ahead and again it differs from that one of box no……..

Anyway, enjoy modelling
Be aware that I have bought the box of “01” …
